Providing a huge respite for IIT aspirants taking the test for the second time, the IIT Joint Admission Board has decided to retain ‘60 per cent in Intermediate’ eligibility rule and not apply the new ‘top 20 percentile’ norm.
So, for candidates who cleared their Intermediate examination last year, the eligibility criteria will be 60 per cent marks in Intermediate exams (55 per cent for SC, ST and PD candidates). Candidates who are appearing for the Intermediate examinations in 2013 for the first time have to figure in the top 20 percentile of the successful candidates if they wish to seek admission in IITs after clearing the two-level entrance examination.
“The top-20 percentile rule will be applicable for those reappearing for the 2013 Intermediate exam (to improve their marks), if they use their 2013 exam results to apply for the JEE. Students who plan to use their 2012 results will be selected only on basis of the 60 per cent eligibility rule. This will be a one-time exception,” a note put on the JEE official website said.
The concession will benefit thousands of JEE repeaters from the State. Serious aspirants of IITs make at least two attempts before moving on with other courses if they don’t succeed. The changed JEE pattern had put them in a dilemma and a majority of them had applied to improve their scores to figure in the top 20 percentile in Intermediate exams. Till last year, securing 60 per cent in Intermediate was enough. Interestingly, today is the last date for the withdrawal of applications for the improvement examinations.
The online applications for both JEE (Main) 2013 and JEE (Advanced) will be available from November 1 to December 15. Candidates who wish to appear for JEE (Advanced) must appear for the JEE (Main). The online application form will be available on ‘www.jeemain-edu.in’.
The top 1.5 lakh candidates (including all categories) who qualify with their respective category-wise cut-off scores in JEE (Main) have to register again online from May 8 to 13 on ‘http://jeeadv.iitd.ac.in’. Online applications for JEE (Mains) from November 1 on http://www.jeemain-edu.in. From 2013, successful candidates should figure in the top 20 percentile of Inter exams
